Gil Heitor Cortesão (Lisbon, 1967) reverses the traditional painting process by applying oil painting on one side of Plexiglass sheets and choosing to exhibit the unpainted side. He frequently uses as source material photography from different origins, much of them concerning modernist architecture and design from the 1950’s, 60’s or 70’s. He deconstructs outlines and surfaces, conjuring new situations and unexpected associations. Much of his recent work focuses on the exploration of liminal spaces – thresholds, frontiers, transitions.

His work is included in several collections, including Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisbon), Fundação ARCO (Madrid),  EDP–Electricidade de Portugal (Lisbon), Coleção Fundação de Serralves (Oporto, Portugal), Coleção António Cachola (Elvas, Portugal) or Museé d’Art Moderne Grand–Duc Jean – Mudam (Luxemburg), among others.
